Soldier

He is wearing a fairly standard British uniform, including a Brodie helmet, which would have protected him from debris and ammunition shells. He is also wearing puttees, which were long, thin, strips of fabric wound firmly around the ankles to lower calves. It was intended to provide waterproofing, but didn't help much, especially in the pervasive mud of the trenches. He has his rifle, too, with bayonet attached, so presumably he is "on watch".
